Bhrigu lake in the upper Kullu valley is a perfect destination for a thrilling weekend getaway. Located near the Rohtang pass, it is around 6 kms away from Gulaba village, Himachal Pradesh, India. The trek offers bountiful adventures for backpackers, nature lovers, birdwatchers and tourists in the lap of nature. Named after sage Maharishi Bhrigu, the lake is revered as sacred space. It offers a great sense of solace to the hikers. According to the legend, Maharishi Bhrigu used to meditate beside the lake, this is why the lake changes it colours from royal blue to emerald green. Hence it holds a historical significance for the devotees. At 14000 ft the trek to Bhrigu lake is moderately difficult. It is highly recommended trek for the beginners who don’t have a prior experience of hiking.The Himalayan alpine meadows add to the charm of the place. Surrounded by the snowy mountains and vast fields of green cover, the view of the mountains is captivating. A great delight for birdwatchers, bhrigu lake trek offers a sight of exotic species of Himalayan Monal, phesants, and snowcocks. The spectacle of horses and sheeps grazing on the crest of wide landscapes strikes an exquisite balance to the beauty of wildlife in Himalayas. How to reach
By Air
The nearest airport is in Bhuntar. A town, 52 kms away from Manali. The airport has flights operational from New Delhi and Chandigarh. The local airlines that majorly operate on this route are Air India, Alliance Air and so on.
By road
It takes around 12-14 hours to reach Manali from Bus. The bus can be boarded from ISBT Kashmiri Gate or booked online at https://hrtc.gov.in. Volvo private buses are also operational on the route.
Difficulty level
Bhrigu lake trek is one the easy treks of Himalayan range. Nonetheless, it requires a good amount of physical strength to trek to Brighu lake. Make sure you’re physically fit before heading for this trip. The terrain is fairly simple. It is important to stay hydrated during the trek. The oxygen level drops by 40% which can cause problem in respiration.
Best time to trek
June-October
Hit off to Brighu lake trek in early summertime to experience snow. It is better to avoid travelling in heavy rainfall during monsoon in the month of August with a possibility of landslides in the region. It is ideal to go for trekking between before the month of June and after august. The temperature of the place during june is around 20-25C during daytime and 5-9C during the night. In winters the temperature gets really chilly at 10-15C during daytime to 0 to -7C during night.

In Manali, there are several tourist spots like mall road, Buddhist Tibetan Monastery, Hadimba Devi Temple that are always buzzing tourists throughout the year. The journey begins from Manali. Drive to Gulaba (Altitude: 8,500 ft) is a smooth 22 kms drive and it takes about 2 hours to reach the village. The trekking begins from Gulaba and for the first day it’s a 3 kms trek to the Meadows camp which takes about an hour to reach. Before the trek commences the volunteers conduct a presentation on the on the journey and provide an overview of how to tackle with challenges on trek. Ascending towards the campsite, hikers can get a glimpse into the unique lifestyle and civilisation of Gulaba village.
The second day trek is scheduled for a hike to 12,500 feet to reach Rola Kholi,. It’s about 7kms away from Gulaba Meadows camp and it takes about approximately 5 hours to reach the spot. The route here comprises of a steep ascent for the first one and a half hour and then a gentle ascent via Kolang Nallah till the final campsite at Rola Khol
The third day of the trek begins early in the morning from Rola Kholi. Bask in the morning sun and continue to descend to Pandu Ropa at 11,800 feet for the next campsite. The total journey for the day is 10 kms trekking and it takes about 8 hours reach there. The trekking route till Bhrigu Lake is long and with steep pathways it is time taking for many for which it is advised to start early. Its about 4kms steep ascent where the vast greenery changes it textures and colours to brownish shade and if it’s a winter trek then the area around fills up with snow.
The last day of the trek is to return back to Manali via Vashist which is a beautiful location at an altitude of 6900 feet. The trek today is a continuous descend which makes it a lot more easy and effortless. The beautiful Bhrigu lake hiking tour comes to an end at Vashist near the hot sulphur water spring, that dilutes the weariness of the trek with the real warmth of the place.

Me and my sons 19 and 17 years, were desperate to do a cycling tour in India after our Nepal tour with Explore Himalaya.I was nervous doing this kind of trip in India. However, our guide Akshay had planned out the safest tour and he was very safety conscious. It was an enjoyable 8-day trip and though there were some nerve-wracking road rides, most of the trip was awesome with few to no traffic.
