Let me tell you how I felt while trekking through Great Kashmir Lake.
This place has seven beautiful lakes, which will mesmerize you with its beauty; Deep Blue clear skies and its reflection on Dal lake while touching your soul. This trek has steep mountain slopes and sharp slopes, which will be calling you for adventure; Roads by the edge of mountains will give you the adrenaline rush.The unscathed virgin flora and fauna will take you to another world like a Disney movie does; letting you completely vanish away from hustle and bustle of city life.
The starting point of this trek is Sonamarg, meaning “meadows of gold”. Here you will find ,Alpine and Snow clad mountains, misty clouds touching the cliff of mountains , boat houses floating in beautiful lakes to sleep in. The soul soothing gurgling streams, trekking through the meadows and walking by the side of blue lakes besides snow covered mountains.
Whether you are a nature lover, a trekker or a photographer ,you are going to love this place. This trek is few of the most beautiful treks in the world and that is why it is called paradise on earth.

Though very beautiful, you surely need to come prepared to fully enjoy the trip.
Let me tell you it is a moderately difficult trek
You will be
- crossing 3 high passes
- ascending an altitude of 1500 ft every day (approx).
- covering a distance of 10-12 km per day.
- trekking for almost 6-7 hours a day
So I would recommend you to come prepared , so that you miss nothing, fully enjoy it and make it exclusively memorable.

Explore the heavenly place, Srinagar , known for lakes,boathouses, and gardens. In the evening, Travel from Srinagar to sonamarg (distance – 90 km ,altitude -7800 ft) Enjoy overnight camping at Sonamarg.
Distance to be covered: 9-10 kms. Time : 8-9 hrs. Altitude: 7,800ft -11,400 ft. Trekking starts from Sonmarg for Kashmir Great lakes! We will cover a distance of 9-10 kms and reach Nichnai (7800 ft- 11400 ft) We will have breakfast at the guest house Start our trek from Sonamarg and cover a distance of 3km and stop at a roadside Food stall. We will pass through an army check post where we have to submit our ID proofs. From checkpoint, you can enjoy the beautiful view of Thajiwas glacier and Sonmarg Valley. We will walk through lush green forests and long pine trees, while trekking through Shitkadi to Shekdur. You can enjoy the quick snackes and energize yourself. We trek by the side of Nichnai Stream to reach Nichnai from Shekdur. Here we will have Lunch and take rest.
Distance to be covered: 12 kms Time : 7-8 hrs Altitude: 11,400 ft to 13,000 ft We will trek from Nichnai to Nichnai pass. It’s 90 mins ascent. This is last point for mobile coverage area. We will decent from Nichnai pass to Vishansar. Here you get to explore the Vishansar Lake, which is just 15 mins. Walk way.(You may even find it frozen, if you trek in month of July-August). Here we will be camping. It has got open ground, so you can definitely warm up a bit by playing soccer or cricket. Keep away from Dogs.
We will take this day off for acclimatization. You can also visit Kishansar Lake, which is about 1.5 kms from campsite. Then we will move to next campsite.
Distance to be travelled: 14 kms. Time: 10 hrs. We will trek from Vishansar to Gadsar via Gadsar pass, the highest point of the trek. From here, you get a view of Kashmir Lake and Glacier of Gadsar lake. After crossing the Gadsar lake, we again pass through army check post. Here we will be submitting our ID proof again.
Distance to be covered: 11kms Time: 6-7 hrs. We will trek from Army camp towards streams. Here you get to enjoy the steep terrains and flat lands. We will take a break at Maengando that is surrounded by mountains. Finally we reach the Satsar lake and camp here for the adventurous night.
Distance to be covered -9 kms Time -8 hours Today you get to check your endurance. You will walk through rocks filled terrain, walk by the end of satsar lake and then we reach forest line. From here, we ascend to an height of 13,400 ft . While trekking through this great height ,you get to enjoy local Gujjar huts and several ridges. You also get to enjoy the twin lakes: Gangabal and Nundkol. After enjoying the gurgling streams, lush forests , we proceed towards Nundkol Lake. This is where we camp for tonight.
Distance to be covered – 12 kms Time- 7 hours We trek from Gangbal to Narang. While walking through this land you get to see Yellow wild flowers and long pine forests. We can also visit Naranag temple

Me and my sons 19 and 17 years, were desperate to do a cycling tour in India after our Nepal tour with Explore Himalaya.I was nervous doing this kind of trip in India. However, our guide Akshay had planned out the safest tour and he was very safety conscious.
